Its name stems from “Yameco,” a Dutch mispronunciation of the word “yamecah,” which means “beaver” in the language of the Lenape -- the Native Americans who lived in the area when the Dutch first began colonization back in 1656. Since the Dutch spell the English “y” sound with a “j,” English mispronunciation of the word slowly corrupted the name until it became “Jamaica” as it is known today.

Though there is a sizable residential area in Jamaica, it is mainly known for its substantial commercial and retail area -- most notably that of Jamaica Avenue -- making it a shopping destination for tourists and long-time New Yorkers alike. Jamaica Avenue is home to nearly 400 businesses that range from internationally known chains to local and independent stores, as well as a growing restaurant scene that houses some of the city’s best Salvadorian food, along with an impressive assortment of other ethnic selections.
